Continuing Internships in a Virtual World
Internships are a proven work-based learning opportunity to prepare talent for the future workforce, benefiting both the students and individuals who partake in them, as well as for the employers who provide the opportunities. Given the uncertainty of the summer 2020 workforce in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many internships have been rescinded as companies are no longer sure of how to provide meaningful, engaging work opportunities to students without knowing whether offices will be open and employees on site to support and manage the intern experience. However, with the loss of in-person classes, projects and other engagements, continuing internships is even more important for the budding workforce to learn both employability and hard skills that come from direct exposure and engagement with industry, especially for the STEM workforce, where only 11% of business leaders feel students are prepared with the skills they need to be successful coming in. While internships may look a bit different this spring, summer, and coming year, with the right guidance and preparation, companies can shift to virtual internships that provide substantial impact both for the interns and the employers without losing these crucial opportunities.

This conversation will feature insights and guidance for how we can shift from on-site to virtual internships, including a corporate leader, content expert, and training perspective. These leaders will share how they are pivoting their regular operations in real-time to be responsive to the need, while ensuring the internships are providing tangible, meaningful on-the-job experience.
